The Island of Kauai

Kauai MapThe Island of Kauai is the oldest island in the Hawaiian Island chain.

The only airport is conveniently located in the center of the eastern coast.

Kauai is the only island with the populated area on the rainy side of the island.

The weather on Kauai is cooler and breezier than the other islands with the rainy area at the top of the steep ridges in the center of the island. Visitors to Kauai find the lush, green ridges an elegant background to the sunny weather at sea level.

The Poipu Beach region is the warmest and has the best beaches. The Lihue Airport region has one resort, the Marriott Hotel. Kapaa and Wailea offer many condos and hotels. The beaches in the region can be unsuitable for swimming.

Princeville is a development that includes golf and two resorts. The Princeville Resort and the Hanale Bay Resort. There are condos also. The accommodations are on a high cliff with access to good beaches below. This region is cool and can be damp.

Hanalei Town is populated by permanent residents. The town is a fun day visit for shopping and dining. Access to hiking and beaches on the Napali Coast is beyond the town on a narrow coastal road that stops at the entrance to Napali State Park.
