Oahu has great dinner cruises and luaus. Also Pearl Harbor and the Polynesian Cultural Center. Oh yes, a dolphin show at Sea Life Park.
Kauai has waterfalls and rain forest hiking. Poipu Beach is great for swimming. Beaches in other regions are less friendly. The island is quiet and quaint.
The Big Island has the Kilauea Volcano and Kealekekua Bay, a national underwater sanctuary where you can swim with wild dolpins. There is easy access to botanical gardens and waterfalls.

Planning your trip is a big part of the fun. Use the hotel guides for each island to choose an appropriate resort or condo for your family. You will be able to narrow down what is important and what you can get along without.
Condo or resort?
Condos are ususally privately owned apartments with kitchens. There may be a laundry in the unit or in the building. Some condos are managed by resort management companies and some are managed by the owner or by a local real estate agency. If you want to prepare your own food or are traveling with children, consider a condo.
Resorts are usually managed by a chain that you recognize such as Hyatt or Hilton. The resorts offer lots of discounted rates and sometimes the same room is offered with several different options and rates. The lowest rate may be only a few dollars less than a special that gives you an upgraded room or free breakfast. Don't settle for the lowest rate, it may not be the best deal.
