The Big Island, official name Island of Hawaii, is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands with 11 of the world’s 13 climactic regions due to the high elevations of the two volcanic mountains.
Volcanoes National Park is one of the most visited adventures in the Hawaiian Islands.
If you are a nature-lover this island is a visit to natural landscapes from desert to rainforest in a paradise of tropical beauty.
There are 4 regions of interest on the Big Island. Kona, Waikoloa, Hilo and Volcanoes Park. There are 2 airports, Hilo and Kona.
The Kona Keaole Airport accommodates international flights and inter-island flights. The Hilo airport is for inter-island and helicopter tour flights.
The Kona region has rocky coasts with a steep decent to deep water. Beaches are rugged, not good for swimming but there are several excellent snorkeling regions where wild dolphins are abundant.
The Waikoloa region has one of the best sandy beaches at Anaeho'omalu Bay. Along the Kohala Coast going north there are several small beach and Hapuna Beach. Hapuna is a postcard perfect beach.
Hilo Town is the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands. When you arrive in Hilo you may think that time has forgotten Hilo. Most visitors are on their way to visit Volcanoes National Park, 28 miles up the slopes of Mauna Loa at the Kilauea Crater.
Volcanoes National Park is a must see if you are visiting the Big Island. The drive to the park from the west side of the island is about 100 miles. It is best to stay over night in Hilo or at the Volcano Lodge inside the park for viewing of the active lava flow at night.
